This month's interview is LONG overdue, but well worth the wait. I had the honor of being
"Boothed" next to this amazing artist at last year's Bent-Con. Sean Platter was every much as friendly as he is talented. Not only is Sean
one of my favorite erotic artist, I learned he was an artist on several
of the cartoons I watched growing up!
SEAN PLATTER: An Insight
Favorite Guilty Pleasure:
"Buying Books"
What are you doing when you're not drawing or writing?
"Working on my 1920's House"
How old were you when you came out?
"I was in my 20's and decided to use my real name on porno illustrations I was doing for the 'In Touch for Men' magazine"
Do you have any talents outside of art?
"Not really. I can't do math and I can't spell - so I'm pretty much stuck."
If you had to replace your artistic talent with another one, what would it be?
"Service"
Which living person do you most admire?
"Anyone
famous already has admiration, so for me it's nameless regular folks.
Folks like social workers, those who give their whole lives to charity,
and single moms & dads who are working 2 & 3 jobs plus
raising their kids."
If you could have dinner with 3 dead people, who would they be?
"Oscar Wilde, Leonardo DaVinci, and Alexander the Great"
SEAN PLATTER: The Artist
The twisted fantasy element is what draws me to your work. I love it!
What
tips can you offer in pushing art outside of the norm? I know this
question sounds a lil lame, but it's an honest one. Sometimes you can
just feel like "Oh that's been done so many times." What do you do to
push past that feeling?
"That's not a lame question at all. Sometimes I just go for the jugular :)
I
ask myself what imagery would get the biggest reaction from folks, then
I figure out how to "dress it up" and make it mine. I'm a huge fan of
decadence, which is the combination of opulence and decay; and that is
the mix I use in my art. Also, I can't stress EDUCATION enough.
There's a whole world of the bizarre out there that can be harvested to
make images "cool," twisted," "shocking" or help you say whatever you
want. History gives us some really wild story lines, situations, and
shocking behaviors. Nature gives us incredible designs for monsters,
demons, weapons, armor, etc."
Who were/are some of the biggest influences on your artistic style?
"The
classics like Arnold Böcklin, Felicien Rops, Hieronymus Bosch, Maxfield Parrish, Alphonse Mucha, and many of the children's book illustrators
of the 1910's - 1930's. Also entire art movements like the Orientalist
& Symbolists. Then present day artist like Simon Bisley, Roger Dean, Yoshitaka Amano, Bill SienKiewicz, and Brom. I also really like
the airbrush & gold-foil paintings of Hindu gods sold to devotees in
India."
What tools do you use to create your work?
"My
work is 90% digital, so I use a variety of programs to do my work, such
as: Painter - drawing/sketching, 3DS MAX & Poser - perspective
help, Photoshop - assembly & coloring, CorelDraw - graphics."
Do you have a routine - What is your process when you start a piece?
"1. Rough concept sketch at 25% of final size
2. Research
3. Trace up rough sketch at 50% size, making the drawing more accurate and using my research
4. Enlarge the sketch to final size and fix any errors
5. Block in colors in Photoshop
6. Take into Painter to shade and paint/draw details
7. Take the painting back into Photoshop to balance colors, add textures, and finalize
8. Heave a big sigh, cross my fingers that everything works at the printer's then take a huge nap."
Which part of drawing do you like the least?
"Perspective! But my trusty computer buddy helps me over that hurdle."
Is there anything you don't like to draw?
"I'm not very good with mechanical things like cars & motorcycles."
What projects are you currently working on?
"Tattoo
designs for a few folks, getting the next DEMONICSEX comic off the
ground, and doing pre-production art for the DEMONICSEX movie.
I've
also just signed on to do an online comic with the well-known writer Dale Lazarov. It's going to be in a very different style from
DEMONICSEX, and I can't wait to get started!"
SEAN PLATTER: Sex
Top or Bottom:
"100% Top"
What would it take for you to flip?
"Good painkillers"
Who are 2 celebrities you'd jump into a 3sum with?
"Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson & Terry Crews - but they both have to bottom. ;)"
What's your fetish?
"Rubber and a well-made bed."
Most over rated thing about sex:
"The need to sound like porn stars"
Sadist of Masochist?
"Sadist
- since I was a kid, I wanted to be the cackling villain tying a
writhing Batman to a stainless steel table so I could run my hands and
tongue all over his muscled body. Luckily; I later found out I was gay
and I could do that without having to tie anyone up first - though the
thought of it still sounds like fun."
How big is "TOO BIG?"
"My doctor's prostate exam is too big."
Thank you, Sean Platter!
You are and will remain a big inspiration to me as an artist and a human being.
